There’s hitchhiking and then there’s this: trying to catch a flight by jumping on the wing of a moving plane, so as to be able to gain access into the cabin.
It happened a few days ago, with one of the Boeing 737s belonging to Azman Air, at the Murtala Muhammed International airport in Lagos, Nigeria, CNN reports. There is video of the incident, which shows a man climbing and then walking on the wing of the plane, while passengers inside freak out and ask for the emergency doors to open.

The video was widely shared on social media and is also available at the bottom of the page.

CNN notes that the man’s identity hasn’t been released to the public, but he is in police custody. For this stunt, he simply walked out on the tarmac and began pacing around the plane, which was gearing for takeoff.

When the pilot saw that the man would not leave, he radioed the airport and then shut off the engine, aborting the takeoff. That’s when the man actually climbed on the wing and then banged on the door, shouting that he be let inside the cabin. Buying plane tickets is so yesterday!

Because he asked to be allowed inside, it is reported that he was simply trying to “hitchhike” a ride out of Lagos. That is yet to be confirmed.

“The man has been taken into custody and is being questioned, Nigeria's airport authority said in a statement,” CNN writes. “The incident did not delay the flight that was headed to Port Harcourt in Nigeria's Niger Delta, however, passengers and crew members disembarked for another round of security checks, the airline said.”

Luckily, the man was not injured, but this stunt could have ended very differently for him had the pilot not noticed him wandering out on the tarmac.
