Cannabis consumption in private spaces is decriminalized in certain parts of Spain, but you still can’t drive around with a van packed with cannabis plants and expect to get a handshake from the police during a random traffic stop.
One driver had the misfortune of being pulled over for a traffic-related offense and got busted for transporting 1,130 marijuana plants in his van. The funny part is that he actually tried to convince the cops that he was transporting peppermint, Newsweek reports.
You may have guessed it: the police didn’t buy it. The 34-year-old driver, whose identity hasn’t been disclosed, was pulled over in a Madrid district for making an “irregular maneuver.” The officers found some cash, a navigation license and a contract for purchasing a boat on him, the report says. However, the strangest find was still around the corner.
“After officers had asked the man for documentation, they noticed several suspicious packages under some sheets in the seat next to him,” Newsweek says. “The police then asked about these packages and the driver became visibly nervous, responding that they were simply plastic boxes.”
The officers found even more packages in the trunk, making up a grand total of 1,130. Asked what they were, the driver told them they were peppermint plans. He didn’t provide an explanation for the cash, the navigation license and the paper proving his intent to acquire a boat.
The driver was charged with a crime against public health, which is a common charge for drug-related crimes. A police investigation is underway.
While this drug-related arrest is strange, it can’t hold a candle to an incident from August 2018, also in Spain, when police pulled over a suspected impaired driver and found he had consumed every drug imaginable – plus alcohol.
Police were tipped by concerned citizens about a possible DUI driver and performed a traffic stop. The driver failed the field sobriety tests and then tested positive for cannabis, amphetamines / methamphetamine, cocaine and opiates, while also having a high blood alcohol level. Talk about taking the party on the road.
