Karl Sanders was outside his home when he noticed a man in his neighbor’s Honda van. He knows the owner, who is a woman, and he knows the man inside had nothing to do with her, Sanders tells CBS 13. So he went over to the car to confront him about what he was doing.

Naturally, Sanders didn’t imagine he’d be jumped and beaten to a pulp, but this is precisely what happened. The 16-year-old car burglar got out of the car and put a massive beating on Sanders, who ended up in the hospital with a ruptured spleen, a broken rib, and bumps and bruises.

The teen then ran away and was caught by police not far from the scene of the attack, the report notes. His identity has not been made public because of his age, but he is facing charges of burglary and assault, while police are looking at him in relation to other car break-ins in the area.

Despite the injuries sustained, Sanders says he would do it again. “I happen to know the neighbor that owned the car, that’s part of why I did it. Like I said, I just did what I thought was right,” he tells the media outlet.

“I see my brother sitting on the gurney, he’s just covered in blood,”
his sister Barbara says.“If you ask him, he’ll tell you ‘I just did what anybody would’ve done.’ Most people wouldn’t have even called police, I’m proud of him.”

The neighbor / Honda owner also says that this is simply the kind of man Sanders is and she’s grateful to him for being this way. Had the teen taken the car or damaged it to the point where it would have been rendered undriveable, she wouldn’t have been able to replace it because she can’t afford it.
