Rumors regarding a possible US launch of Indian manufacturer Mahindra & Mahindra appeared in the online media a long time ago but until now, there was no confirmation on the matter. Well, Mahindra boss Pawan Goenka said in a statement that such a scenario is indeed possible and the first models to hit the United States will probably be a re-worked version of the Scorpio SUV.
There are no official release date for the time being but Goeka hints that Mahindra's plans could become reality as soon as this year if everything goes according to the plan. The SUV will be sold through a network of around 300 dealers, the Mahindra official said.
And that's not all. Mahindra is looking way beyond the United States and wants to become a global player in the automotive market. Although it already sells cars in some European markets, the Indian carmaker wants to debut in the United Kingdom as well, with first model rumored to be an uprated Scorpio. Some sources are hinting that the launch will take place in 2011.
"We want to be a global player in utility vehicles," Goeka said according to insideline.com. "If volumes are good, we will think about making cars in the U.S., and then we will be looking at Europe with a higher focus."
Curiously, Mahindra wants to stay away from the sedan sector and only intends to concentrate on the SUV market, despite the rest of the market which continuously directs its efforts towards small cars and fuel-efficient engines.
"We never intend to be in passenger cars on our own. It's too crowded and competitive a market," Goeka concluded.
