Mad Scientist Gives Birth to Hyundai Motorsport Electric Race Car

Hyundai announced at the beginning of August the creation of a very special EV at the hands of its Motorsport division. As that electric racer is gearing up for its official presentation at the Frankfurt Motor Show next week, the South Korean carmaker released a second glimpse of the car. Sort of.

The mysterious machine is supposed to be the first electric vehicle developed by Hyundai Motorsport, a move that “underscores the company’s ambition and credentials.”

And that’s about all we know about it. There’s no word on what car the racer is based on, if any, what powertrain it uses, and not even what competition it is meant for.

Today, aside for Formula E, there is no other major competition dedicated to electric vehicles. A few are in the works, including eTCR, a revival of the now-defunct TCR racing series.

If this is the competition this car is meant for, then we should expect a four- or five-door touring car the likes of the Cupra E-Racer. As per the limitations of the series, the vehicle is to have a maximum battery capacity of 65 kWh, rear-wheel-drive configuration, a single gear, and a maximum of 680 horsepower.

All this is speculation at this point, and not even the teaser video, with its Frankenstein-like mad scientist giving life to the car using lightning, doesn’t shed much light on the subject.

But, as team Director Andrea Adamo says, this car should be the next chapter in Hyundai racing.

“After a positive reaction to our new electric project, we are excited to unveil the car at IAA,” the executive said in a statement.

“It will mark the continuation of our motorsport journey, starting a brand-new chapter, as we embrace new ventures. The future is looking bright, and we look forward to revealing more in Frankfurt next week.”
