Macan Helps Porsche Boost Sales by 17% in 2014, Overtakes Iconic 911

Porsche has just released its sales results for 2014 and we'll get to that a little later in the story. But first, we have to take look at the Macan. Now, there's a lot of talk about downsizing the premium market, but not all good things come in small packages. Many of the compacts claiming to be posh have bad suspension. The Macan isn't built with those sorts of flaws and seems to have found a great sweet spot in the market.
It's also bringing new customers to Porsche showrooms, people who want a family car that's made in Germany and isn't the size of a tank. 3 out of every 4 Macan buyers were new to the brand.

In 2014, Stuttgart's prancing horse managed to deliver 189,850 cars to customers worldwide. That's an increase of 17 percent over the previous year. During the last month of the year, December, the company managed to brake the 20,000 barrier for the first time ever in a single month, by delivering 20,644 cars (+39 percent compared to December 2013). We can't help but think the Macan had something to do with that.

The 911 is the worst selling Porsche model?

Unlike it usually does, the German automaker didn't provide model-by-model results and we think we know why. Save for the 918 Spyder, there are six models in the lineup, correct? The Macan SUV was "the fifth model series [that] sold about 45,000 units in the first year of its launch." And yet that's 50% more than the 30,000 units of the 911 sold.

In other words, the 911 is now Porsche's slowest selling car, which is kind of ironic.

“Our brand experienced an additional upswing in 2014 as a result of the successful launch of the Macan. Worldwide, seventy-five per cent of Macan customers were first-time buyers of a Porsche car,” said Bernhard Maier, Member of the Executive Board Sales and Marketing of Porsche AG.

There weren't any surprises when Porsche's sales were divided on a market basis. Asia demand was highest at over 73,000 units, 47,000 of which went to China (25.4% more than in 2013).

However, unlike other German brands, Porsche performed extremely well in Europe and America. The United States was as the number one single market in the world with over 47,000 new vehicles delivered. Meanwhile, at home in Germany, nearly 24,000 customers opted for a Porsche model.
