Next year BMW will be turning 100 and we simply can’t cope with the thought that the Germans could leave us without a celebratory model. They simply have to do something special to celebrate their centenary.
Rumors about what they might do have been around for a long time, ever since the M1 Hommage concept came out basically but nothing was ever confirmed by the officials. The M1 Hommage celebrated 30 years from the unveiling of the company’s only so-called supercar and got a lot of fans of the brand excited about what the future may hold.

More years passed though and nothing close to what that concept was showing ever surfaced from Munich. Sure, we have the i8 but that’s a completely different thing and it’s far from a halo car like the M1 was. No, BMW needs something more for its centenary.

Other quickly speculated that there will be an M8 car coming out. Various sources seemed to say that it would be a version of the i8 that used its lightweight construction together with a more powerful engine and would become the second proper supercar that BMW ever launched. As enticing as that sounds, the officials denied in various ways such a project and said multiple times that the M and i sub-brands will never merge.

Sure, the technology from one could be used on the other but that’s about it. Therefore, an M8 would be impossible to do. That doesn’t stop us from wondering what could be done by combining the two.

That being said, 2016 will be marked by the launch of the M2, a car that will be bringing back to life the recipe that made BMW who they are today. It will be a small, light and powerful coupe just like they used to make back in the day. Will it be enough?

Probably not, the enthusiasts looking for more new models in the absence of an iconic one that would put their worries to sleep. That’s probably why we’ll be getting the M4 GTS (or CSL) next year. It’s an improved version of the standard M4 that weighs less and has more power thanks to a water-injection cooling system.

It could also be the first car in the line-up to use OLEDs for stoplights, headlights and throughout the cabin. We’ll have to find out though, as we didn’t see any prototypes of the car out testing the new tech so far.

Will that be enough? Could be but it all depends on what BMW actually decides to do. Who knows, maybe there’s a secret project being developed as we speak that could make all of our assumptions here null. We’re hoping that’s the case.
