Lykan Hypersport Skyscraper Jump from Furious 7 Is Plausible According to Physicist

The world is seemingly busy watching Furious 7 these days, as this one poor editor tried to get a ticket to see it over the weekend and had to postpone his plans. Why? Because all the cinemas were fully booked.

According to Imdb.com, the movie just broke into the ten biggest U.S. opening weekends of all time with revenues of $143.6 million in the States alone. That’s a lot of money for only one weekend... Furthermore, Furious 7 is the only film in the top 10 that isn’t based off a comic book, young-adult novel or toy.

To be more precise, the top is led by The Avengers with $207.4 million followed by Iron Man 3 with $174.1 million, Harry Potter with $169.2 million and others. So what’s all the hype about?

Well, leaving the death of Paul Walker aside, the stunts performed in this latest installment of the Fast and Furious saga are, simply put, outrageous. They actually threw cars out of a flying plane to film this movie, and they drove one of the most expensive cars in the world on its set, the Lykan Hypersport.

Priced at $3.4 million, you wouldn’t even want to scratch this hypercar that has diamonds in its headlights and a gold-plated roof. That being said, what do you think the guys did with it in the movie? That’s right, they totaled it but not before jumping through two skyscrapers in a stunt that was nearly the impossible.

Under normal circumstances, nobody would even stop and think if that stunt would be possible, rendering it as total BS from the first second but we’re talking about a hypercar here and that changes things.

The specs of the Lykan are impressive, with its 750 HP 3.7-liter engine and 2.8 second sprint to 100 km/h (62 mph) the whole thing gives you something to think about.

That’s probably why the guys from Vulture went ahead and asked a physicist if what we saw could be possible. According to Lee Loveridge, a professor of physics at Pierce College, it’s probably the most plausible stunt in the whole movie.

There are some rough estimates regarding the distance travelled, the number of floors that the car jumped and its speed but overall, it turns out, you could actually take the car from one tower to the other like in the movie. The worst bit about attempting it is that you would probably die from the impact as the shock absorbers couldn’t handle the drop.

So there you have it, if all the assumptions about the width of the buildings and the speed of the car are correct, the jump we see in the movie would be doable but it would at least leave you with a shattered spine if not even dead.
