Well, Uber apparently lost this ride. We’re saying this because the San Francisco-based transportation giant is regularly the one who searches for new ways to entertain their customers. Lyft has no interest to send you back to the future, but they are offering 15-minute rides through the McFly Mode.
DeLoreans were powered by a Peugeot-Renault-Volvo 2.85-liter V6, which doesn't exactly make them the supercars of the future, but should provide the right amount of excitement. After all, it’s New York City we’re talking about here; it’s not like you hit the track anytime soon. Even so, the DMC-12 could achieve the 60 mph mark in 8.8 seconds from a standstill, when equipped with a manual transmission. A little under two seconds would be the delay triggered by an automatic transmission.

Lyft is not looking to scare the little petrolhead within, though, so their offer should still come as a great deal. Here’s their announcement:

“In Back to the Future II, Marty McFly time travels forward and lands 30 years later, on 10/21/2015 - which just happens to be our present day. Since hoverboards are still in beta testing, we decided to celebrate with a true classic: the DeLorean. We’ve teamed up with Verizon for #WhyNotWednesday to give free DeLorean rides around NYC.”

The drill is simple; you just request a ride in McFly Mode for a chance to get picked up in a DeLorean and take a free ride for up to 15 minutes. No traveling through time included. As a matter of fact, where Lyft is taking their customers, they still need roads.

Now, since we’re discussing October 21 already, we figured we may as well remind you about Toyota Mirai’s official launch in the US. The Japanese carmaker managed to get both Christopher Lloyd and Michael J. Fox back on screen and announced there would be a big surprise video they would launch right before the clock ticks the right time.
