Recent footage taken with a Russian dash cam shows a cyclist miraculously getting away with no injure after he found himself between a truck and a sedan, right before they crash. Not only does the man survive unimpaired, but he even reaches out for the truck driver who’s ride eventually tips over.
First of all, let us get one thing straight from the beginning: that the fault for this whole accident goes to the truck driver who decided not to take into account the sign showing him to give way for the red Mazda sedan legally driving through the intersection. As to the cyclist, as far as we can tell, there was nothing wrong with his riding.
Secondly, let us express our amazement. Seeing this fellow facing a near-death experience and somehow walking away unharmed simply makes you wonder if guarding angels really exist. Slowing down the video, you’ll find that chances for any other person on this planet to escape the accident are as big as Superman saving him. Still, not only he managed to walk away in one piece, but he even decided to help the truck driver who ends up stranded in the cab after it tipped over.
This guy got really lucky, but according to the world’s figures not everybody does. In fact, the World Health Organization claims road traffic injuries remain very high at 1.24 million deaths worldwide in 2010 (slightly down from 1.26 million in 2000). Also, over a third of road traffic deaths in low- and middle-income countries are among pedestrians and cyclists. However, less than 35% of low- and middle-income countries have policies in place to protect these road users.
