We’re about two years away from the moment when GT supercars will stop rolling off the assembly lines over at Ford Performance. And the Blue Oval plans to make the remaining years count, while at the same time stepping on the toes of customers who already got delivery of their rides.
As it happened countless times since the car’s re-introduction in 2016, there’s something special brewing in the Ford laboratories for the GT. This time, we’re talking about more power, new looks, and an overall extended appeal.
In a move that surprised pretty much everybody, Ford announced this week the launch of the 2020 GT with 13 more horsepower than before, gained thanks to “lessons learned from the limited-edition, track-only GT Mk II.” That brings the total to a nice round 660 hp.
The engine that powers the car is the same old EcoBoost, only tuned with the addition of gallery-cooled pistons and higher-energy ignition coils. Engineers also tampered with engine cooling and airflow, and fitted a lighter Akrapovic titanium exhaust.
To mark the increase in power, Ford will also introduce the Liquid Carbon GT, a version that “places an emphasis on GT's lightweight sculpted carbon fiber body completely free of paint color.”
That’s right, no paint, just a clearcoat meant to highlight every carbon fiber weave. To go with it are carbon fiber wheels, titanium lugnuts, six-point racing harness anchors, five interior options and five caliper colors.
Also, the already available Gulf Racing heritage livery has been updated with a black pinstripe to divide the distinct blue and orange colors.
"Ford GT continues to be the pinnacle of Ford performance," said in a statement Ed Krenz, Ford Performance chief program engineer.
"GT is always the ultimate expression of Ford racing innovation, and as we know from the 1966 Le Mans through today, that means constantly raising our game for our customers as well as earning the checkered flag."
Ford said deliveries of the 2020 GT are already underway.
