Lucid Motors Promises Range of 400-Miles for Its Imminent Luxury Sedan

Of all the EV startups that are threatening to take Tesla's throne at some point, Lucid Motors has been the most consistent. The company funded by Chinese billionaire Jia Yueting has stricken a fine balance between keeping things secret and offering enough information to generate hype.

Back when it was called Atieva, it launched a series of videos (well, there were two of them) featuring a white Mercedes-Benz Vito van trashing a few sports cars and a Tesla Model S while drag racing. That Vito was the company's test mule, and it promised to be fast.

Then, after changing its name to Lucid Motors, the actual car was revealed, even though still wrapped in camouflage. Just like the other moves the company has made, this too showed enough to make us feel like we weren't cheated, but still kept plenty hidden for the big unveiling.

We are now one day away from that moment, and just as we were getting ready, Lucid Motors came out with another announcement. It claims that its yet unnamed luxury sedan won't be just fast, but will also come with the industry's longest maximum range.

After striking a partnership with Samsung SDI, they announced an important breakthrough in battery technology. We still don't have any more details about that, but according to Electrek, Lucid Motors did reveal the fact that it will offer a 130 kWh battery pack as an option, which will render the EV capable of going more than 400 miles on a single charge.

The standard car is expected to come with a 340-mile maximum range, obtained from a 100 kWh pack, the same as Tesla Model S'. However, the Model S P100D is currently capable of traveling for 315 miles before it needs a recharge, but the upcoming non-performance version using the same battery is expected to reach the 340 miles mark as well.

With production set for 2018, there are still a lot of things that could change in Lucid Motors' plans for its vehicle. For now, though, everything about it looks and sounds promising. Hopefully, we'll know a lot more tomorrow, after the presentation.
