When your company is losing money and sales show no sign of improvement, not to mention your latest model is by far what fans expected, you only have one card left to play: build an SUV/crossover and hope it will be well received. What do you say, Lotus?
Think of the Geneva Motor Show as a huge summit, where car industry leaders get together to discuss about where is the automotive world going and whatnot. This year, the Lotus boss was the one raising the eyebrows.

Mr. Jean-Marc Gales, Lotus CEO, announced that his company will invest in a new model this year and according to some prospects, it is very likely that Lotus will play the “we’re making an SUV/crossover” card.

Now, this sounds like desperate measures in desperate times, as we all know that the SUV recipe turned out really well for manufacturers like BMW and Porsche in the past and the trend is still here right now, if we consider recent intentions from Bentley and Aston Martin regarding the SUV/crossover niche.

But Lotus has big plans, as Mr. Gales plans to reinvent the segment: “We would do an SUV that is very light, very fast on the track and has outstanding handing. I’m a bit torn between an SUV and a four-door sports car - but in the end I can see that the SUV has the bigger market,” Gales explained.

These comments come after a rather poor display at the 2015 Geneva Motor Show, where the Evora 400 was regarded by some as less than a facelift, although engineers made it 22 kg (48 lb) lighter than the standard Evora and also fitted the coupe with a bigger supercharger.

Is the SUV recipe going to work for Lotus? What do you think?
