Lotus, being the forward-thinking company that they are, have now begun testing of a plug-in hybrid version of the Evora, called the 414E. It is powered by two EVO electric motors which drive the rear wheels, drawing power from a 17 kWh battery pack. However, the rear wheels may have difficulties in handling the 414E’s torque figure of 1,000 Nm, as well as the more-than-decent power output of 408 hp.
These numbers enable the 414E to sprint from 0-100 km/h (0-62 mph) in under 4 seconds, and on to a top speed limited to 210 km/h (130 mph). It can run solely on electricity for around 48 km (30 miles), but things don’t end there, as the car features a 1.3-liter three-cylinder range-extender engine with 47 hp, which can be optionally fitted with a supercharger to boost the power figure to 67.5 hp. A two-pot range extender will also be offered, however, we think that its 27 hp output is a bit weak to charge the batteries of a very sporty car. Official numbers say that the petrol engines will increase its range to 480 km (300 miles), so you will definitely avoid the shame of being stranded anywhere in this car.

The 414E will also feature a synthesized sound, which along with the steering wheel-mounted paddles (which cut the car’s thrust to simulate gear changes) will attempt to fool the driver into thinking he’s driving a conventionally-powered machine. We really do not agree with this practice as we think that the quiet surge you get from an EV has its own appeal and it shouldn’t be interfered with.

Now undergoing testing, the car has not received an official launch date, yet. However, we are really looking forward to seeing it in action, as those 1000 Nm mean that it’s going to be a beast and offer unrivaled levels of in-gear oomph.
