As the two riders fought for the leading position, Pedrosa ran wide when exiting Abbey and let both Lorenzo and LCR Honda's Randy de Puniet pass him. From that point on, Pedrosa was nowhere to be found in the leading pack of the race, eventually finishing the British GP on a disappointing 8th place. Lorenzo, in turn, started building up a massive lead and his 1st spot was never to be challenged until the chequered flag.
However, that isn't to mean the race was boring. Far from it actually, as the battle for a podium finish between no less than 4 drivers kept the British fans connected at all time. Randy De Puniet held on to 2nd place until late in the race, when Honda's Andrea Dovizioso managed to pass him and secure the runner-up position.
Behind him, Ducati's duo Nicky Hayden and Casey Stoner battled Tech 3 Yamaha's Ben Spies for 3rd place, while De Puniet slowly started to lose pace and slip to 6th place. The reigning World Superbike champion managed to fend off the two Ducatis after some thrilling last couple of laps, when the two Americans – Spies and Hayden – engaged in a wheel-to-wheel battle for the last podium place.
They eventually finished Spies, Hayden, Stoner for 3rd, 4th and 5th, while followed by Puniet less than 2 seconds behind. Marco Simoncelli produced his best result in the MotoGP to date with a 7th place finish, ahead of Pedrosa. The Top 10 was completed by Tech 3's Colin Edwards and Pramac Ducati's Aleix Espargaro.
“My pace was very comfortable. The rear tire was sliding but I think for the rest of the riders it was a little bit worse. You always worry, but today it was a different feeling, a feeling that it could be a good day for us,” said Lorenzo after the race, as the Spaniard now holds a 37-point lead ahead of Dovizioso in the overall standings.
