Londoners Bought the Most Eco-friendly Cars in the UK

Londoners come 1st when it comes to buying eco-friendly cars in the U.K., a fact was revealed by Ecovelocity, the organizers of the “Dynamic Festival of Green Motoring” planned for September 8-11th at Battersea Power station. The figures state that Londoners are the greenest motorists in Britain because they buy the most cars with emissions below 100g/km.

On top of the eco-buyers list sits London with 28% of the cars registered so far this year. The list goes on with the SW regions including Clapham, Wimbledon and Putney close followed by Hackney and Tower Hamlets.

“Drivers in London are cottoning on to green motoring more quickly than the rest of the UK.drivers in other towns potentially have less opportunity to go green but now the rest of the UK needs to take note and understand the fundamental need to fully support the drive towards cleaner, low carbon-emitting vehicles,”
Giles Brown Ecovelocity Event Director was quoted as saying by carsuk.net.

But there is a catch to the eco-buying spree. The reason Londoners are such fans of the eco-friendly cars is a material one. Drivers are taxed based on the CO2 emissions of their cars in London. Any driver entering the London congestion Charging Zone in a car has to pay GBP10 to do so, every day of the working week. But if one enters the Charging Zone in a car with emissions under 100g/km there are no charges. We’d say that this is probably the only reason for Londoners to buy cars with emissions less than 100g/km in such quantities. So this means that they are not so green, they are taxed into doing so.
