If anyone needed one more clear indication that Sebastian Loeb will not be joining the Formula One field in the remaining years of his racing career, the 7-time World Rally champion provided it in a recent interview with French newspaper L'Equipe.
Talking to the aforementioned publication following his semi-successful outing in the Race of Champions over the last weekend – when he was runner-up to Italian GT racer Filipe Albuquerque in the individual running – Loeb insisted that he doesn't see himself compete in an official F1 race in the future. Driving an F1 car for fun however, that's a whole different story.
“Formula One is over for me. If I had a chance to drive for fun, I would certainly do it with pleasure, but I don't think I will compete in a race one day,” said the French driver, who confirmed a few months back that 2011 will probably be his last year in the WRC.
In order to further explain his decision of turning his back on F1, Loeb compared such a move with Kimi Raikkonen's struggle to adapt to the WRC after a whole career spent in Formula One. Not to mention that age is also an important factor, Loeb being 3 months away from turning 37.
“Like you see for Kimi (Raikkonen, former F1 World Champion) also, it's hard work to get the experience and for sure the other way would be the same. When you see the young drivers coming into Formula One, they are 20 years old and I am 36, so maybe I have to think of something else now,” he added.
