Liverpool Becomes First City in the UK to Test Fast Pedestrian Lanes... for Shopping

Whether they call them fast lanes, passing lanes or overtaking lanes, it's that part of a multi-lane highway or motorway closest to the center of the road motorists regularly use to move past the slower drivers. Believe it or not, pedestrians have them too, only that they’re quite rarely used.
As opposed to those built on the road, these fast lanes sometimes pass as rather offending, as if those who can not walk faster should be separated from those who can. Worry not, though, the prototype in question has an unexpected purpose. According to Liverpool Echo, a local retailer called Argos has unveiled Britain’s first ever “Fast Track” pedestrian shopping lane in Liverpool One - a shopping, residential and leisure complex.

The idea of separating dawdling pedestrians from those who are in a hurry came after a new research found almost half (47%) of the nation’s shoppers said the slow pace of high streets was their biggest shopping bugbear. As mentioned earlier, Liverpool customers will be testing out the experimental pavement fast lane throughout this week.

Andy Brown, central operations director at Argos, told the source that “Shoppers have also told us that speed is critical when simply getting around the high street or town centre, so we want to test consumer reaction to a dedicated pavement fast lane. We hope it alleviates some of the biggest shopping high street frustrations.”

If how fast you manage to get to the shop may seem like an odd problem, you probably haven’t heard of something researchers in China call distracted walking. It turns out authorities in Chongqing, China, believe pedestrians need a special lane for those who keep their eyes into their smartphones all the time.

The phone-only sidewalk is not even a one-of-a-kind idea, as Washington D.C. unveiled one last year. The difference was that one was a stunt put together by the National Geographic channel. Have you guys seen a pedestrian fast lane before?
