Back in the day way before the crisis, Ford used to be a force to be reckoned with in the luxury market. It had the run of Land Rover, Jaguar and Volvo, not to mention Aston Martin. But now all that’s left is the Lincoln brand, their only chance to take on Lexus in North America. Yet until recently, these so called luxury vehicles were seen as just disguised Fords.
But according to to Derrick Kuzak, Ford's global product chief, this will never again be the case. The all-new Ford Fusion and Lincoln MKZ will both hit the market later this year, and while they share a platform, that’s where the similarities will end, according to Detroit Free Press. Their dealers will also be differentiated, just like Toyota and Lexus retailers are right now.
"It (Lincoln) needs to distance itself from Ford products on the same lot, as well as from its luxury competitors," said Michael Robinet of IHS Automotive Consulting. "It is something Lincoln should have done six years ago."
