Lincoln is about to kill the Continental, its last car, and we think that's completely fine. But you can't have a successful company that only makes consumer goods. Once in a while, the fans need to be thrown a bone. And what better way to do that than with a luxury muscle car based on the Ford Mustang?
Some designer at FoMoCo has probably been thinking about that for a while. But unless we get a concept or something exciting, the only Lincoln version of the Mustang we'll get is going to be based on the Mach-E.

This rendering by wb.artist20 explores the possible look of a Lincoln muscle car, which he calls the "Thoroughbred" for obvious reasons. It's not strictly speaking based on the Mustang.

If that photo at the top of the Instagram post has you confused, we'll let you know you're looking at the Galpin Fisker Mustang Rocket from 2014, which proved that mister Fisker had his fingers in all the pies.

Key differentiators between the Rocket and your normal Mustang include a 725 horsepower supercharged version of the Coyote engine, a luxury interior, and that funky nose. We don't like it, but a larger snot must have come in handy for the rendering.

So is there a precedent for turning one sports coupe into another one that's slightly more luxurious? Yes, there is. An obvious example would have to be the classic Infiniti G35/G37. And unless we're mistaken, the Lincoln Continental from the 1980s was based on the Fox platform, though we're not sure that counts.

Late last year, there was a report that Lincoln was indeed developing a Mustang-based model. However, this was a Mustang EV they were talking about, and we're not sure if the plan is still on track.

"You can make beautiful vehicles in different ways," Kumar Galhotra, speaking on Wednesday at the Automotive News. "The BEV technology gives us so much freedom to sculpt that vehicle exactly how we want it. We're going to create elegant Lincoln BEVs."
