Lily the dog, a 9-year-old basset hound, is the latest viral video star. Although in retrospect her attempt at running away from her owner seems hilarious, it was dangerous. The good news is that she wasn’t hurt.
Lucie Green was out walking Lily in Kawakawa, New Zealand, as she does every day. It was pouring rain, but Lucie stuck to the same routine, which also included popping inside a store to buy a snack for herself and leaving Lily outside, tied to a Coca-Cola flag.

Lily, as you can see in the CCTV footage available at the bottom of the page, had other ideas in mind. The moment Lucie went inside, she makes a run for it, dragging the flag after her. She heads straight into traffic, but the flag makes her visible to all drivers and she’s not hit by any of the cars.

By this time, Lucie is right on her tail, literally. The video shows the dog change directions and stopping traffic, and the pair disappearing into the distance. Towards the end of the video, a couple of men are laughing and applauding, which is clue enough that the chase ended well for both dog and her human.

Speaking to NZ Herald, Lucie admits that she can laugh about the incident now that she’s seen it on camera, but at the moment, she was scared witless. She didn’t even realize she ran into oncoming traffic, because all she could think of was that Lily was probably terrified.

“I don't know what happened on this occasion but something spooked her and she jumped. The concrete slab on the flag scraped along the ground and then she took off. I turned around and charged down High Street,” Lucie says.

“I was yelling her name at the top of my voice. I finally caught up to her and she had turned the corner to try to take herself home, it was quite a long run and weaving in and out of traffic. It looks like I'm chasing a windsurfer down the street!” Lucie adds.

They both made it home safely, eventually. That’s when Lucie realized she had to return to the store to give them the flag back and pay for her snack.
