It feels like only yesterday Renault unveiled the fourth generation of the Clio supermini. Now, about two years later, the Megane 4 is getting ready to come out as well.
Spanish magazine Motor16 has an interesting scoop on the 5-door hatchback that will revive Renault's compact car sales.
According to them, the Megane 4 will be shown at the Frankfurt Motor Show. We find it a little hard to believe, considering the event is only a month away. But maybe we'll only get a little taste of the car, not the whole reveal.
We'll remind you that when the new Twingo came out, they literally told us nothing about it until it was ready to go on sale.
The Megane 4 will be underpinned by the same CMF modular platform as the Kadjar and Talisman. It's a way to increase reliability, save weight and cut costs at the same time.
Modular platforms have almost become bragging tools for automakers. The SEAT Leon and VW Golf have the MQB, Peugeot uses the EMP2 for the 308 and there are many more like it.
But the business plan of the new Megane seems to be nearly identical to that of the Opel Astra. Because this segment is not proving very profitable, costs will be reduced, and the model range will be simpler.
The Megane 4 will debut with one petrol engine, the 1.2-liter TCe 130, and two diesels, namely the 1.5-liter dCi 110 and the 1.6-liter dCi 130. Later on, a performance model with 160 horsepower will be added, but it will use a 1.6-liter twin-turbo diesel, just like the Astra.
All these engines will be available as standard with 5- or 6-speed manual gearboxes. The auto option will consist of a 6-speed EDC twin clutch unit.
Regardless, the new Megane will first focus on offering efficiency, space and comfort. The latest R-Link 2 infotainment system will offer advanced functions through a 7-inch screen. The dashboard will be available as a configurable all-digital unit, while a full suite of scanners will supposedly keep you safe.

The next Megane RS
We've read various other reports about the Megane RS and opinions seem to be split. One French publication says it will use a 1.8-liter turbo in combination with an electric motor while British media suggests Renault won't have its hybrid tech ready until 2020 or even later.Regardless, the new Megane will first focus on offering efficiency, space and comfort.
