The Licensed Taxi Drivers Association (the LTDA) has announced that it would be a tragedy for the well-known TX4 black cab to be manufactured outside the UK, as it represents a moving landmark for the city of London, and other major UK cities. The manufacturer is currently under state-provided administration and is looking for a new financial backer, which may move production outside the UK - their traditional home is a factory in Coventry.
The LTDA has started a campaign, which uses the UK’s largest labour body, Unit, as well as the Mayor of London, Boris Johnson, Prime Minister David Cameron and Business Secretary Vince Cable for support. An estimated 400 cabs were taken off the road in a recent recall, due to faulty steering boxes.
However, replacement parts were sourced, and the cabs were put back into service. However, what about new cabs to be added to the fleet? Well, LTDA general secretary, Steve McNamara said: "Obviously, we would rather it was kept in the UK [ . . . ] We see it as an iconic vehicle - overused word but it is true - it is recognised as an English brand. It would be a tragedy to see it being made abroad."
