LG Chem Has a 300-mile EV Battery, Watch Out Tesla Model S

Range anxiety is a real thing for some EV and PHEV potential buyers but also for those doubting the potential of green cars. Tesla took some measures to fix this issue, but here come LG Chem and their 300-mile battery pack.

Believe it or not, South Korea hosted this year's Electric Vehicle Symposium, and LG took the home turf opportunity to announce that they can now offer a battery pack for electric cars, big enough to grant a maximum range of 300 miles (483 km).

According to Ecomento, the new battery packs use Lithium-ion technology and range between 80 and 120 kWh. Looking at the bigger picture, that's more than Tesla Model S has to offer with its 85 kWh battery.

LG Chem managed to build a consistent portfolio of clients in recent years, as the company is supplying battery packs for Chevrolet's Spark and Volt EVs, Renault's Zoe, Ford's Focus EV and the Volvo V60/XC90 T8.

In other future-related news, LG Chem's product will also be installed on the upcoming 2017 Chevrolet Bolt, the EV that claims to offer a 200-mile (322 km) maximum range. Also, Volkswagen Group is relying on LG Chem battery packs, which will be introduced on the new Audi Q6 E-Tron electric SUV and, if rumors materialize, on the new Porsche sedan expected to hit the market anywhere between 2017 and 2018.

Although battery manufacturers won't comment on the financial aspect of their business, reports published a couple of years ago saying the price of lithium-ion batteries will drop turned out to be accurate. That happened because slowly but steadily, EVs and PHEVs managed to infiltrate into the global market and display an upward trend in sales.
