After the double whamming from recalls, a strong yen and problems with natural disasters last year, Toyota really has learned its lesson and is taking the “build them where you sell them” philosophy to heart.
The Japanese automaker has just announced that shifting production of North American-sold Lexus RX crossovers from Japan to a facility in Canada. The corporate decision comes with a $100 million price attached to it, but that won’t change the fact that it’s cheaper this way.
The automaker will hire 400 new workers and will boost production in Ontario from 30,000 today to about 104,000 cars.
2011 was a good year for the RX in North America. The Japanese luxury automaker sold 83,000 of these vehicles, but most of those came from Japan, which reduced the profit margin.
For the 2013 model year, the RX has been improved with a styling makeover. The spindle grille first seen on the GS sedan has been grafted onto the nose of the crossover, together with a new bumper.
Lexus also introduced the F Sport variant of the RX, which get revised steering, suspension and other tweaks which are supposed to make it handle more aggressively.
