Lexus RX450h Gets Front Wheel Drive

Lexus announced that it will introduce two new versions for the RX450h. The most important addition will be a front wheel drive incarnation of the vehicle, which was only available with all wheel drive until now.

The new version has been created to maximize the potential of the hybrid powertrain in terms of fuel consumption and emissions, with the vehicle promising to offer an efficiency of 6.0 liters per 100 km and emit 140 grams of CO2 per km.

The vehicle’s powertrain has remained unchanged. This means that under the hood we’ll find the same 250 hp 3.5 liter V6 petrol unit working in conjunction with a 167 hp dual electric motor (the combined output is somewhere around 300 hp).

Unfortunately, ditching the rear wheel part of the drive system also means that the car gets inferior performance. This means that the FWD RX needs 8.2 seconds to reach 62 mph (compared to 7.8 seconds for the AWD model) and offers a 20 km/h decrease to speed (180 km/h).

In addition to that, Lexus will also introduce a top of the range equipment level for the RX450h. Dubbed Platinum, this comes with a wide list of top features, such as a panoramic electrically-operated roof, a head-up display and a leather upholstery.

The FWD model will have a starting price of 55.200 euro/$71,550 (this also makes it the entry level model of the hybrid RX450 range), while the Platinum version will set you back EUR72,450/$93,931.
