Lexus’ Advanced Pre-Crash Safety (A-PCS) system can help save pedestrian lives, as was proven by the recent ADAC Active Pedestrian Protection test.
The test showed that the Lexus A-PCS can avoid a collision with a pedestrian through early detection and autonomous braking from a speed of up to 50 km/h (31 mph).
Lexus’ upgraded A-PCS with collision avoidance assist is one of the most advanced pre-collision active safety systems in the industry, specially designed to assist the driver in avoiding or mitigating collisions with other vehicles or pedestrians by day or night and at different speeds.
The system combines a millimeter wave radar, near infrared projectors and a stereo camera to help detect a wide range of obstacles. As soon as the A-PCS identifies an obstacle in front of the vehicle, it will assess the likelihood of colliding with with, based on their position, speed and trajectory. If the system anticipates a high probability of collision, it activates a warning buzzer as a red “BRAKE” indicator.
That doesn’t stop here, though. Simultaneously, the A-PCS will activate several integrated safety systems - the Variable Gear Ratio Steering Emergency Steering Assist (to improve steering response), Adaptive Variable Suspension (to stiffen dampers, reduce nose dive and increase braking distribution in an eventual emergency brake), Vehicle Dynamics Integrated Management (to increase stability during an evasive maneuver) and Pre-Crash Brake Assist System (which increases emergency brake force when the driver presses the brake pedal).
If the driver fails to take actions in the right amount of time, the A-PCS will brake automatically and depending on the relative speed, it can bring the car to a full stop to help avoid a collision.
