Lexus is thinking about building a new model in Japan later next year, to increase its already comprehensive vehicle range. The automaker is considering to make either a sports coupe or a crossover.
The Kyushu plant in Japan will be the home-base for the new Lexus model at first, after which it will be shared with the plant in Georgetown, Kentucky in 2015.
We don’t know too much about the upcoming model, not even its name or class, but Lexus’ Executive Vice President Mark Templin gave us a little hint about it in an interview with Automotive News. The company is considering either a sports coupe or a crossover, with th balace leaning towards the first, as RX model covers already three segments in the range.
"The RX actually does triple duty today. It covers its own segment, it covers a smaller [crossover] segment, and it covers a larger segment," Templin said. "The coupe market is about the same size in the United States and Europe. It's not an enormous market, but it's an important segment in terms of what it does for image. I think a coupe could change perceptions of our brand and make us a more emotional brand and potentially reach younger buyers."
We are already excited thinking of another sports coupe in the automaker’s range, especially after we’ve seen the Lexus LF-LC and the LF-CC concept cars, and we are eager to see more details on the upcoming car.
