All those sharp folds, creases and tough looking surfaces could turn you into thinking the new Lexus NX compact crossover is a deathtrap, just like the boxy cars of the past. Well, you’re forgetting this is made by Toyota, which is somewhat obsessed with safety.
The Lexus NX is pretty well equipped even in standard trim, coming with safety features like eight airbags in addition to an immensely strong passenger safety cell, whiplash injury lessening seats, stability control, ABS as well as a pre-crash safety system which uses a millimeter-wave radar and a computer to calculate collision risk ahead and apply the brakes automatically.
Optionals include lane keeping assist, blind spot monitoring, adaptive cruise control, auto high beams and rear cross traffic alert. However, even without these, the NX managed to score five stars in the Euro NCAP safety tests.
The pre-crash system has been proved to work at speeds between 30 and 70 km/h (18.6 - 43.5 mph), successfully stopping the car at lower speeds and mitigating a hard impact at higher velocity.
Even if a crash occurs, the NX is very protective with its occupants. The passenger compartment remained stable in the frontal impact and dummy readings showed good protection of the knees of the driver and front passenger.
The NX also scored maximum points in the side impact barrier test and the only problem comes along with the side pole crash, when it appears that the side airbag has a small latency to inflate due to the algorithms controlling the lateral acceleration sensors.
That sharp edged front end seems to be pretty damping in key areas, with the bumper returning good or adequate protection to pedestrian legs, while the hood surface showed predominantly good or adequate protection. The only poor zones are the front edge of the hood and the base of the windscreen, especially in the pillar areas.
