The wait is over and Lexus finally flicked on the lights to shine brightly on its new LF-C2 concept which can now be seen at the 2014 LA Auto Show. Seems to be the sharpest design study the Japanese automaker came up with so far.
Although the LF-C2 is said to be a design study previewing the brand’s future direction, we strongly believe this concept will get slightly reshaped and go into production as the Lexus RC convertible. And there should also be an RC F drop top to rival the BMW M4 convertible.
Design wise, the LF-C2 is already heavily influenced by the shapes of the RC F, but they got sharper, the three-piece LED headlights with the L-shaped daytime running lights have been slightly repositioned and the spindle grille is bigger than anything you can see on the market. Lexus was really talking seriously when it said it would come up with even more striking designs.
The objective with the new concept is to combine different shapes with special colors to create different characters depending on lighting conditions and the angle the car is looked at. The golden yellow paint is obtained by a multi-layer process, with the first layer being the primer, followed by silver, a clear coat, a reflective yellow and another top coat. Similar to the special red shade on the RC.
Simple interior, complex feeling
Step into the 2+2 cockpit and you’ll be welcomed by the same quality and attention to details Lexus has always offered. The exterior sheet metal is extended inside via a center console running down the length of the cabin all the way to the dashboard.
The dashboard wears a simple yet attractive styling with a “classic” binnacle, a central video monitor controlled via a touchpad and there’s also the classically-styled analog clock placed in between he central air vents.
Overall, the car manages to create that strange effect of being a harsh beast on the outside but embrace you in one of the most luxurious and tranquil interiors on the market, thanks to soft shapes, materials and light colors.
At 4,715 mm (185.6 in) long, 1,840 mm (72.4 in) wide and 1,385 mm (54.5 in) tall, the LF-C2 concept is just a tad bigger than the production RC coupe, which suggests the designers and engineers won’t have too much work to do in order for us to see a production version convertible soon.
