Presented at the 2018 Detroit Auto Show, the LF-1 Limitless is a utility vehicle-styled concept from Lexus with influences taken from the LC. Described as a “flagship crossover,” the one-off also serves as a “showcase of technology, innovation, and the latest evolution of design at Lexus.”
At the world premiere of the LF-1 Limitless, the luxury automaker also claimed “the concept could be powered by fuel cell, hybrid, plug-in hybrid, gasoline, or even all-electric,” which is Lexus talk for “we haven’t thought this through, sorry!”

Japanese publication Spyder 7 is citing “European sources” about the production model, which could use the 3.5-liter V6 (2GR-FKS) from the LS 350 and the multi-stage hybrid (8GR-FXS) from the LS 500h. Speculation is also rampant about a twin-turbo V8 engine with 4.0 liters of displacement and 670 PS (close to 661 horsepower).

We’ve heard Lexus is developing such an engine for rear- and all-wheel-drive applications such as the LC F, but if the manufacturer plants it into the LF F or whatever it could be called, then Lexus would take on the Lamborghini Urus super-SUV from Sant’Agata Bolognese.

Spyder 7 speculates the production model would premiere at an international auto show “in 2020” while sales could start in 2021. Lamborghini is certain to upgrade the Urus with an even more powerful plug-in hybrid option by then, which means that Lexus will play catch up if the higher-ups intend to throw the ball in the court of the Raging Bull.

The publication further expects the price of the LF F to start at “around 150,000 dollars,” which sounds like a lot compared to what Jeep offers with the Grand Cherokee Trackhawk. The 707-horsepower SUV starts at 87,695 including destination charge, coming as standard with all the bells and whistles you could imagine.

On an ending note, will Lexus put this thing into production, at least the V6-powered options? Considering that the range of crossovers stops at the RX L and the SUV range starts with the GX, we tend to agree with Spyder 7 on what the future holds for the LF-1 Limitless.
