Reading the official fuel economy benchmarking for a car is a thing, but taking that vehicle out in the real world is a whole new mileage story. Unlike in real traffic conditions, the official fuel ratings are made in the lab, following a certain pattern engineered to simulate real conditions.
That’s why UK’s WhatCar? technicians are testing new cars every week out there and benchmark them for actual fuel consumption in real traffic. And their latest test was aimed against the most economical executive sedans.

Their testing put the Audi A6 2.0 TDI on third place with a true fuel consumption of 56.1 mpg UK (46.7 mpg US or 5 l/100 km), the Mercedes Benz C220 CDI on second place with 57.5 mpg UK (47.8 mpg US or 4.9 l/100 km) and the Lexus IS 300h on top position with a whopping 59.6 mpg UK (49.6 mpg US or 4.7 l/100 km).

We too tested the 2014 Lexus IS 300h and the 220 hp machine returned 52 mpg US (4.3 l/100 km) in the city and 33.6 mpg US (7 l/100 km) on highway.
