Lexus Hints at Performance Turbo-Hybrid

Lexus has recently revealed a new 2-liter turbocharged four-cylinder unit at the 2013 Tokyo Motor Show, which will be used on the production NX compact SUV. But that may not be all, as the unit could spawn some new turbo-hybrid system to increase performance on some models.

The luxury division executives refused to comment about the possibility of a new performance hybrid system. However, speaking with Drive.com.au, Toyota deputy chief officer of product planning Satoshi Ogiso said that there is a chance.

“Of course (from a) technological point of view, some possibility exists,” said Osigo. “Turbocharged system requires some amount of cost, production cost. We should add battery system, that is our standard way of style,” he says. “But premium brand [may go] another way.”

Information is scarce and the automaker didn’t released any official specs for the new engine, the only thing mentioned being the fact that it will achieve the same amount of torque as the 3.5-liter V6 engine, that being around 380 Nm.
