Typical of Lexus, the designers took an existing model, gave it some aftermarket and bespoke parts, then called it a concept. The same applies to the GXOR, which stands for GX Off-Road concept if you were wondering.
On display at the FJ Summit in Ouray, Colorado through Sunday 21st, the GXOR won’t make it into production. But the components used to transform the GX 460 into this concept aren’t all that hard to find and apply, save for the GXOR badging and the Goose Gear custom-designed drawer system.
Built for adventure, the GX Off-Road features ICON suspension with remote reservoirs for the shock absorbers and billet control arms with delta joints. No-nonsense underbody protection is complemented by CBI frame sliders, a 160-watt solar panel, safari snorkel, and a good ol’ roof rack.
Bringing the point home, Lexus decided to show off the towing capabilities of the GX 460 with a Patriot Campers X1H trailer and the Redarc Tow-Pro brake controller. The list of improvements continues with all-terrain tires measuring 275/70 R18, a custom front bumper with a winch, radio system, 50-inch light bar, Alu-Box storage cases, and a pair of Maxtrax recovery boards.
Based on the Toyota Land Cruise in Prado flavor, the GX has been redesigned for the 2020 model year. The spindle grille and triple-beam LED headlamps are the most obvious changes, but for the first time ever, customers are also treated to an off-road package that includes Multi-Terrain Monitor.
Standing true to the ethos of the Land Cruiser, the GX further features a two-speed transfer case and torque-sensing center differential, Crawl Control, and Multi-Terrain Select. Some things, however, never change.
The engine is a well-known V8 with 4.6 liters of displacement, packing 301 horsepower and 329 pound-feet of torque. When equipped properly, that suck-squeeze-bang-blow enables the GX 460 to tow up to 6,500 pounds (2,948 kilograms). Expect the 2020 model year to arrive at dealerships towards the end of 2019 with a small price bump over the outgoing model ($52,505 excluding destination charge).
