The latest environmental project made by the students at St. Ursula Academy in Ohio just got them a $10,000 award from the Lexus Eco Challenge.
Wanting to help the environment, the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) Club students installed a modified rain garden behind the school that now acts as a natural filter for water running off a big parking lot nearby. The rocks and grasses filter the oil, salt and fertilizer contained by the runoff that previously drained into a creek that feeds into the Ottawa River.
“It may not be much to look at, but we got a lot of thumbs up from teachers who said there has been much less standing water and the smell is better,” said Caroline Lewandowski, a senior from Toledo.
