Lexus Discusses LFA Successor, Trolls Us

For all those looking at the image above and wondering what the connection between Lexus’ LFA supercar and the Back to the Future DeLorean is, the answer is simple - if we want to talk about the LFA successor, we have to look far, far ahead into the future.

Lexus only built 500 examples of the LFA between 2010 and 2012 and, perhaps with the exception of used examples, they’re all sold out. Yes, Paris Hilton has one. According to Bloomberg, Lexus is looking to ignite the supercar story once again, but we may have to wait as long as 30 years before that happens.

"Akio [Toyoda] believes that every generation deserves to have a car like an LFA, so we're building an LFA for the generation we have today," Lexus Executive Vice President Mark Templin told Bloomberg. "At some point, there may be another special car for another generation."

Lexus spokesman Brian Lyons decided to be a bit more specific, telling the aforementioned source that the LFA’s successor could arrive in three decades from now. We’re pretty much sure cars from 2040 won’t have to many things in common with the automobiles we drive today, so this may just be one of the finest forms of trolling we’ve seen this year. Actually, we salute that.

Over the last few years, there have been numerous talks about a second incarnation of the LFA we know, which the rumor mill saw as coming in an open-top form and benefiting from various upgrades that might as well make it more desirable than the coupe. There’s still not official word on this.

Then again, it’s not difficult to understand why Lexus would have a hard time replaying the LFA story. This was a car that, if sold based on its specs alone, wouldn’t have made sense. Still, the sheer engineering masterpiece lying inside it was enough to offer it a place in the hearts of aficionados.
