Lexus CT 200h to Feature First-in-Segment Safety Systems

Lexus’ upcoming premium hybrid compact car, the CT 200h promises to rewrite the laws of the segment it belongs to.

As the vehicle makes its U.S. debut at the New York International Auto Show, Lexus announces that one of the means through which it will achieve the aforementioned performance is the use of first-in-class safety systems that will cover both the active and the passive safety areas.

The Lexus CT 200h will be the first model in its class to use a pre-crash safety system (PCS) and an adaptive cruise control (ACC).

The first, already introduced on other Lexus models, uses a millimeter wave radar sensor to scan the road in front of the vehicle for potential impact hazards, offering driver support in order to avoid a collision if an obstacle is detected.

The adaptive cruise control works together with the PCS system, relying on the same hardware to keep a pre-selected distance from the vehicle ahead. When the road is clear, the system takes the car up to the cruising speed set by the driver.

The vehicle will also feature an electronically controlled braking-regeneration system (ECB-R) that manages both hydraulic and regenerative braking systems, aiming to maximize energy recuperation by the vehicle’s electric motor during the braking deceleration phase. The system incorporates multiple active safety systems, such as ABS with brake assist, traction control and vehicle stability control.

As far as passive safety is concerned, the vehicle offers a total of eight airbags, including the first-in-segment driver and front passenger knee airbags.

It is hard for us not to mention the fact that we hope the CT 200h will also get a brake override system...
