Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button Promise Epic Battle for British GP Win

Needless to say, this year's British Grand Prix will become the stage of one of the most exciting races of the season, as the all-British team of McLaren Mercedes have put their entire energy in developing an updated package for the Silverstone event. The Woking based team will certainly want to raise their game and put both of its drivers on the podium, but team orders will definitely not come into play two weekends from now.

And that's because Jenson Button will absolutely want to clinch his first win in career in front of his home fans, while Lewis Hamilton is obviously on an ascending trend this season and wants to show his teammate who is THE driver in the McLaren lineup.

I'm sure Jenson does want to win, but it doesn't mean he wants it more than me, so we'll have to wait and see,” Hamilton told the Press Association Sport in an interview. “We'll race fairly, and the fastest guy will win, hopefully a one-two, which would be special, real special.

Every year we go there it's a mega experience with the support you have. I really just hope it will be an incredible experience again, that the upgrades we have work, and we're able to demolish the field. It's just down to me and Jenson doing a solid job, without one or the other having problems,” added Hamilton, whose first (and last) win at Silverstone happened in 2008 and ended with a bunch of donuts for the fans.

On the other hand, Button will want to avenge his poor British GP last year, when he came to Silverstone in the title winning Brawn GP car after 5 wins from 7 races, yet he finished on a disappointing 6th place. Since he has already won an F1 title, Button admitted taking his first British GP win is the next milestone to conquer.

I've won in Monaco and I've won the World Championship, so winning my home grand prix is the one thing that is missing from my CV,” said Button, who made it very clear that he's going for the win no matter what.

I'm a British fan, but I don't just want a British winner. I want to win myself. I've a lot of competition with Lewis because he's very quick, and in the last few races he has finished in front of me, albeit just in front of me, but he has finished in front of me. So I want to win the grand prix. I'm sure Lewis does. It's a very special grand prix, and I think this year it's going to be more special than it has been for a long, long time,” added Button.

The two will not only battle for the British GP win – although that is clearly the most important thing for them right now – but also for the lead in the overall classification, where Hamilton leads the championship by only 6 points from his teammate.

Speaking about the duel between those two aces, former 3-time world champion Jackie Stewart admitted that, while not giving Button a lot of chances against Hamilton at the beginning of the season, making a pick for the British GP winner right now would be a tough one.

In recent races, we've seen Lewis be the guy who is the one who has taken the victories. But Jenson has the ability to drive the car without getting tyre temperatures off the scale, and he just has an amazingly smooth and gentle way of treating the car. It promises to be an epic battle between those two, and if they can get a one-two at Silverstone - and I just don't know which way it will go - it would be absolutely enormous,” said Stewart.
