As far as career changes go, this is perhaps among the boldest: two women made a New Year’s Resolution to give up their desk jobs and turn truckers, and are now among the most popular truckers and vloggers in the U.S.
Nic and Carla Rochelle are married, black and in the trucking industry, a combination so rare they knew it would be a shame if it wasn’t exploited on social media. The result is a very popular YouTube channel that’s helping them spread the word on what it’s like to be a (lesbian) woman working as a trucker, the dangers of a life on the road, and the amazing moments.
Recently, Nic and Carla also spoke to The Huffington Post about their life and how it came to be this way, as you can see in the video available at the bottom of the page.
They started out working together at a call center. Carla was Nic’s boss at the time, but only Nic had dreams of working as a trucker. On January 1, 2018, already in a committed relationship, they decided to start the new year with a new life, so they left the desk job behind, sold everything they had and entered into the trucking industry.
They imagined trucking was hard, but they weren’t prepared for what they found. They tell the HuffPost that it’s difficult to be a woman in this male-only industry, especially if you happen to be non-white and gay. They’ve found themselves in difficult and unexpected situations, and in danger, but they choose not to focus on those. Instead, they turn these experiences into life lessons, which they document in their vlogs.
Their vlogs cover anything from trying to eat healthy while trucking, relationship advice and tips for securing loads. The women tells HuffPost that trucking isn’t just a career, it’s a lifestyle – and as challenging as it might be at times, they’re not sorry for choosing it.
Feedback from the community has been overall supportive, they say. Male truckers praise them and other women say they’re inspired by their example, and might even be tempted to give trucking a go as well.
