Ever since the Titanic split in two and sank in the freezing waters of the Atlantic Ocean, Leonardo DiCaprio started getting involved in climate change. Well, we’re talking about the virtual disaster they used to shoot the famous 1997 movie, not the actual sinking of the British passenger liner. It’s not director James Cameron who inspired the famous actor to turn to preserving the environment, though, but Al Gore.
“I was awakened to the severity of these issues in the late 1990s when I met with then-Vice President Al Gore at the White House. He and I spoke for an hour about climate change and how it was, and is, the biggest challenge facing our society for the next millennium. Al Gore inspired me. I decided then and there that I wanted to be part of protecting our planet by investing my time, energy, and voice to raise awareness of climate change and the many ways humanity is impacting our environment.” This is the answer to just one of the questions the Hollywood star was asked in a recent interview.
Sure, if you’re a fan of the Oscar-aspiring actor, you probably already know he is an extreme environmentalist who has supported 70 projects in over 40 countries and in every ocean. Just recently, DiCaprio donated $15 million to a wide variety of environmental initiatives.
Good for him. Change this world, already! But how is that related to Formula E? Well, FIA - which is running the green single-seater championship that annoys all petrolheads - has recently created the Formula E Sustainability Committee.
In other words, we’re looking at a forum for major global corporations who are all linked by a common concern for sustainability. The committee, which Leonardo DiCaprio will chair, will meet to exchange ideas on how to tackle some of the world’s most pressing environmental issues. According to FIA, DiCaprio will be joined on the committee by the CEOs of the Championship Partners and Shareholders, as well as by Alejandro Agag, CEO of Formula E Holdings.
The times, they are changing indeed.
