Leon Haslam Confident in 2010 Season

Having left the recently defunct Stiggy Racing Honda team, Leon Haslam, who has been signed by the Alstare Suzuki team for the next WSBK Championship season, is feeling confident in his chances. The 26-year-old Briton admitted his hopes have increased thanks to the bike's performance during winter testing.

Haslam has joined Frenchman Sylvain Guintoli in the Belgium-based team lineup, both riders having already completing tests at Portimao in Portugal, Phillip Island in Australia and Valencia in Spain.

"I am really happy with the way things are going and I had another two days with the boys in the team last week,” Haslam was quoted as saying by the series’ website."I have been happy with the consistency we had at the last test. I did three 1min 34.0sec laps of Valencia, which is very pleasing. I'm about a second a lap faster than I was in the races there this year and I finished fifth in both races, so I have to be optimistic about my chances," he added.

The Stiggy Racing Honda team announced its withdrawal from the Superbike and Supersport World Championships after a close evaluation of its poor economical situation. Being a private team in a Championship like Superbike, which comprises seven factory teams, it was very difficult to survive without a solid financial backup and support.

Despite financial disadvantages, the team ended its year as the fifth best ranked team in both SSP and SBK classes 2009. However, key members from the team will continue their participation in the 2010 WSBK Championship season, having been signed by the newly-formed Reitwagen BMW team. As we said in a previous report, Johan Stigefelt will be the technical manager, while former racer Peter Goddard will serve as chassis engineer.
