LEGO Volkswagen Bus Is a Hippie Engineer’s Dream

Psst! You didn’t hear this from us, but when engineers have some spare time, they usually like spending it on projects that include designing, building or improving stuff. Basically, it’s all engineering, even if it’s outside the working hours. Well, we might have just come across one of the most relaxing little projects, something that can be done in between taking the kids to weekend activities and keeping your SO happy.

With a little hippie flavor, we bring you the LEGO Volkswagen Type 2, or, as friends call it, the Bus (if those friends happen to live in the UK, they’ll call it Camper).

This is not an official set, but a personal creation and yet we’d love to see it going official. It comes from Youtube user Sheepo, a guy who's more than passionate about LEGO. Then again, there’s so many improvements that could be brought to this 1:7.8 scale plastic VW Bus.

What a good engineer could do to upgrade restomod this

First of all, you could build a Porsche engine for it. You’re already familiar with the flat six configuration, so this will be a piece of cake. The current configuration is a 4-cylinder Boxer with a cooling fan.

The hippie culture might have been free of such boundaries, but this LEGO creation comes with door locks. You can perhaps play with LEGO’s hydraulic bits and pieces and come up with central locking.

You can leave the rear swing axle and the front rigid beam independent suspension in place, but the front drum brakes could be upgraded, as the front already features a disc setup. Yes, the brake pedal is functional and so is the steering wheel.

There’s also a functional 4+1-speed manual gearbox, so why not upgrade to a PDK?

Now, there are two versions of the chassis. One is taken from the same builder’s previous project, a Beetle (naturally), while the other is an RC chassis. The latter is something we’d really, really love to play with. For instance, it has a four-speed (plus reverse) sequential gearbox with an auto clutch function and speed indicator.

By the way, In LEGO size, this measures 66x27x30 studs (Lxlxh), or in what we humans know as the metric system, it comes in a 53x22x25 cm size

The remote controller? Obviously also made from LEGO.
