Don’t know if you’ve been recently in a toy-store, but a vast majority of what you see on shelf is rubbish. Cheap molded plastic with a few functional parts usually made in China for a few cents. How could a kid enjoy playing with that? Thank the Divinity LEGO still exists and is still very popular.
In fact, the Danish toy manufacturer LEGO Group has just surpassed Mattel (aka the Barbie-maker) and is now the world’s biggest toy company regarding both revenue and profit.
Although their current success is based on themed collections, licensing franchises like Star Wars, Harry Potter, Marvel, DC and others to build content brick by brick, LEGO remains the only product out there that puts your brain to good use while still having fun.
Want to see if your child has an engineering orientation? Buy him a huge crate of LEGO and check to see what he/she builds out of the tiny parts. Just watch out not to step on one; these bits are famous for the pain inflicted to unaware walkers.
The LEGO Group begun manufacturing interlocking toy bricks in 1949. All started in the workshop of Ole Kirk Christiansen, a Danish carpenter who began making wooden toys in 1932. Two years later, he named the company “Lego”, which is a shortening from the Danish phrase “leg godt” (play well).
Since the 1950s, LEGO has released thousands of toy sets in a variety of themes, including space, robots, pirates, trains, cars, castles and wild west. As of 2014, more than 560 billion parts have been produced.
It’s success gave birth to both movies and video games, but we all know nothing compares to sitting around with a bunch of parts at hand and creating cool things. Like these guys that made a life-size working car.
