At the end of January, hints of a new generation of cars to enter the expanded line-up of LEGO Speed Champions surfaced on the web, with rumors pointing to the introduction of several additional exciting new models. Among them, the 1968 Ford Mustang Fastback.
On Friday, Ford officially announced that the model used by Steve McQueen in the Bullit movie would also be offered by LEGO as a toy for the fans' toy chest. Sales for the new set of bricks will start at the beginning of March, for a tiny amount of $14.99.
The 1968 Ford Mustang Fastback set comprises 183 pieces and will come complete with timing board, a mini-figure driver in a classic racing suit, plus racing decals and stripes to personalize it. The bodywork comes in green with gold dual stripes and wheels, race graphic stickers and a removable windscreen.
“We worked closely with LEGO to design a vintage Mustang, personalizing the fastback with stripes and decals that harken back to Ford’s racing heritage,” said Matt Monroe, Ford licensing manager.
“This 1968 Mustang fastback race car is a special product that adds even more excitement to Ford’s LEGO Speed Champions lineup.”
For 2018, the LEGO Speed Champions line will add to its existing portfolio, aside for the Mustang, the Ford Fiesta M-Sport WRC, the Ferrari 488 GT3 Scuderia Corsa, the Porsche 919 Hybrid, 911 RSR and 911 Turbo 3.0, and Ferrari's Ultimate Garage.
Prices for the new Legos in Europe range between 15 Euro for the Mustang Fastback and can reach as much as 100 Euro for the Ferrari Garage.
Lego's Speed Champions line was introduced in 2015 after the Danish toy maker signed deals with Ferrari, McLaren, and Porsche to license their vehicles. Seven different Lego models were being offered in this line at the beginning, as well as four sets of stand-alone vehicles.
