RM Sotheby’s is selling a legendary race car built by Peugeot Motorsport. We are talking about a 2008 Peugeot 908 HDi Le Mans Prototype, complete with engine and running gear.
The example available at auction on May 14, 2016, is expected to fetch between 1.2 and 1.6 million euros. The sum is a massive amount for a car, but a fraction of what the French company spent on developing this vehicle.
Unlike other race cars available for sale, this Peugeot 908 features a 5,500-cubic centimeter diesel engine, and it is a clean diesel thanks to its integrated particulate filter.
The powerplant has twin-turbochargers, delivers over 700 BHP, and is mated to a six-speed sequential transmission. The latter features paddle-shift operation.
We must note that this example has finished the 2008 24 Hours of Le Mans race in 2nd place overall. Other notable race finishes include a win at the 2009 Petit Le Mans and another win at the 2010 1,000 Kilometers of Algarve.
When this race car did not win, it came in second place (three results), and it also achieved three pole positions and four fastest laps.
Peugeot Motorsport built chassis number 05 in late 2007, and it first appeared in public as a complete racecar at the 2008 Le Mans on June 11 that year. This example was the replacement of chassis 04, which was destroyed in a stunning accident on testing, ten days before the main event.
Racing drivers like Nicolas Minassian, Marc Gene, and 1997 Formula One Champion Jacques Villeneuve drove this example of the Peugeot 908. The racing career of this exact vehicle was concluded in 2010, after the Peugeot Motorsport team withdrew the 908 HDi FAP.
This vehicle is considered to be a “strong contributor” to the Peugeot 908’s overall record of victory, and Peugeot has won three team championships, three Constructor’s Championships, and two Driver’s Championships in four years thanks to it. Considering its pedigree and its unique characteristics, this Peugeot is entirely worth its asking price.
