BMW brought a decent sized M line-up at this year’s Detroit Auto Show including the brand new M6 Coupe and the X5 and X6 M duo. Alongside these young bloods there was also one of the first cars the Motorsport division ever worked on, a classic 3.0CSL.
Come to think of it, back in the day when the CSL was winning races, the X5 M and X6 M couldn’t even be thought of, let alone sold worldwide in impressive numbers.
Getting back to the matter at hand, the car simply stunned the crowd when it showed up and then remained in a corner, silent, waiting for visitors to pay their respects. Just smelling the rubber and gas sprinkled all over the Batmobile on the outside and inside would turn a car enthusiast into a human resembling a cat on catnip. It’s a hair rising experience.
The car we’re looking at here is the proper race car, tipping the scale at just 1,102 kg (2,431 lbs) and powered by a trademark 3.2-liter inline 6-cylinder engine making 344 HP in its less powerful guises. Ratings would go as high as 430 HP on other models towards the end of its lifespan.
Speaking about the car, BMW USA Chief, Ludwig Willisch said that “at Sebring in 75, this car secured the first victory for our new American company. And other victories - such as Daytona a year later – followed. Yet, the CSL's greatest achievement was to help firmly establish the company as the maker of the Ultimate Driving Machine.” Right you are, sir! Right you are!
