The word is that racing began as soon as the second car from a different manufacturer was built and it never stopped.
If it wasn’t for racing, we’d probably been strolling in motorized carriages now as the evolution of the automobile was directly influenced by manufacturers constantly trying to outgun each other.

That is how aerodynamic car bodies appeared as well as more and more efficient engines and transmissions, which together with advanced suspension systems were putting the power better on the ground, enabling the cars to go faster and corner better.

And when the mechanical improvements couldn’t go further, the electronics came in and revolutionized everything, making the cars as easy to drive as walking in the park.
