As Dumbledore said, “It does not do to dwell on dreams.” But it sure feels nice to be able to escape reality every once in a while, and few other design ideas/concepts are as impressive as Lazzarini’s.
Pierpaolo Lazzarini of Lazzarini Design is a frequent guest of ours, and for good reason: he delivers some of the most bonkers (but in a good way), completely out-there (ditto), and creative concepts in yachting. To put it differently, he takes the very idea of a yacht and turns it on its head to create new shapes with enhanced functionality.

Lazzarini is also the design studio behind the Jet Capsule projects, which are pod-like boats that can serve a variety of purposes, the U.F.O. houseboats, and the Linux boat-car-passenger drone. Every once in a while, Lazzarini also does automotive concepts, whether starting from iconic cars like the Fiat or the Ferrari, or from scratch.

This lengthy intro is necessary to point out the obvious for those not familiar with Lazzarini’s work: here is a design studio that is not afraid to take risks. Whether the goal is to change the shape of something we’re deeply familiar with or to enhance its functionality, or even to add a new dimension of luxury to it, Lazzarini always strives to “take a different approach in design.”

The One limousine is definitely that.

Unveiled earlier this year, this is perhaps the least talked-about project from Lazzarini: a four-person limousine that looks more like a luxury sedan villains in ‘80s to early ‘90s superhero movies would have probably preferred for transportation. Lazzarini never offered too many details on the project, which probably explains why it never got the attention his work usually gets. But it’s still a proper choice for our Celebration Month in terms of luxury transportation if only to serve as a reminder that the future is fancy – and shapable by our desires. One can hope, at least.

The Lazzarini One is technically an AWD hybrid, with a 600 HP engine and an additional 1,200 hp from four electric Bosch motors, one for every wheel. Total length is 6,260 mm (20.5 feet), so it’s definitely no limousine by any stretch of imagination (if you’ll allow the pun). The wheelbase is nearly eight feet (2,400 mm) long.

Stylistically, Lazzarini One is a combination of futuristic styling and retro elements. The thing about how it would make a great supervillain car was a joke, but one that holds water: this thing looks like something that would fit right in Tim Burton’s Art Deco-ish Batman universe, but with an added note of aggressiveness.

The “limousine” is a four-seater, which probably explains the odd choice of adding a fancy canopy door that opens from the back to the existing two doors. Either that, or Lazzarini did it for the heck of it, to add more flare to what was already a visually striking design.

As noted above, this is one rare instance in which Lazzarini did not back up the renders for the concept with more text. This either means the project itself was half-baked or he assumed no one would take any serious interest in it. As a rule, no matter how outlandish his concepts are, Lazzarini conceives them with the ultimate goal of selling them and having the renders become reality.

Should Lazzarini One ever touch the heart of a visionary billionaire eager to draw supervillain comparisons, he or she would better be ready to part with a fortune. The designer lists the hypothetical price of this fancy ride at €2.55 million, which is roughly $3.09 million at today’s exchange rate. But seriously, since when do we put a price tag on dreams?
