The German brand confirmed it is still waiting to receive the EPA’s certification for all of its 2017 diesel engines, but representatives did not know how long will the procedure takes.

As Automotive News explains, the automaker noted that government agencies are taking longer to certify vehicles with diesel engines meant for the United States of America. As one can imagine, the new procedures have been implemented because of Volkswagen’s Dieselgate scandal, a matter which has yet to be fully resolved.

Even though BMW’s diesel models are slightly delayed from certification and sale, the German automaker says its power plants are fully compliant with all emissions standards applicable. The EPA is probably taking its time with each diesel engine it tests, as the organization has not explicitly confirmed the certification delay of any BMW models.

However, when asked about certification delays, EPA representatives answered that they have begun applying extra scrutiny to diesel vehicles. The certification process has also been extended “longer than normal.”

The reply of the Environmental Protection Agency has revealed that nobody should worry for BMW regarding its diesels, as it appears to be a regular step in the new certification procedure.

EPA representatives have also stated in their reply to Automotive News that most manufacturers have been supportive of the additional testing, and they have even adjusted their launch timing according to the additional test procedure.

The EPA has not specified what kinds of testing procedures it applies to the diesel vehicles that must undergo a certification process that is “longer than normal.”

In the case of BMW, four 2017 model year vehicles have been delayed for launch because they expect to finish the homologation procedure first. We are writing about the 328d Sedan and Sports Wagon, the X3 xDrive28d, and the X5 xDrive35d.
