This Sunday, at the annual Palm Springs Modernism Week design festival, Land Rover unveiled the new Discovery Sport Launch Edition model that will soon go on sale. Prices for one of these start at $48,975 MSRP but will go up by quite a hefty margin once you take optionals into consideration.
Basically, the first 250 units of the Discovery Sport will be part of the Launch Edition range and all of them will have a number of distinctive design elements.

For example, the Yulong White Metallic exterior paint that you can see in the photos will be mixed with Ebony Grained Leather for the cabin and this combination won’t be available until 2016. Furthermore, these 250 cars will also have bright finish tread plates, aluminum paddle shifters, brushed stainless steel sport pedals and even monochrome Union Jack valve caps (that’s definitely something you need to pay for).

The new member of the Land Rover Discovery family is now on sale in the US and starts at $37,070 but that’s for the entry-level model that’s not wearing the aforementioned Launch Edition badge. That’s without the $925 destination and handling tax included.

The choice of engines comes down to only one powerplant, unfortunately, a 2-liter 4-cylinder turbocharged one that makes 240 HP and 251 lb-ft (340 Nm) of torque. In turn, this mill can only be had in conjunction with the new 9-speed automatic gearbox from ZF that is sluggish at times and even feels like a downgrade from the old 6-speed unit.

Even so, sales of this 5+2 model will surely be more than satisfactory, mostly due to the design of the car. Expect it to reach dealerships in April.
